China tawarkan bebas visa untuk WNI
Jumat, 29 November 2013 19:39 WIB
Pewarta: Rini Utami

Firms hope tourism unhurt by Oz-RI tension
Tension in the relationship between Indonesia and Australia was expected to have no impact on Australians' strong interest in visiting Bali, the island dubbed their second home, tourism practitioners said Thursday. Despite the issuance of a travel advisory by the Australian government, travel agents still expected that Bali would remain a favorite holiday destination for many citizens of the neighboring country.

Krisna Teja, head of division in the Bali office of the Association of Tour and Travel Agencies (ASITA) handling the Australian market, was optimistic that the standoff between the two national governments would not reduce the number of Australian tourists arriving in Bali. He said the association had contacted some of its business partners in Australia to find out if there was any impact on tourism.

"They said they had felt no negative impact related to the issue. For years, Bali has been a second home for many Australians, and we hope it will remain that way" he said, wishing that the conflict between the two governments could be settled.

According to Teja, who has been handling the Australian market in Bali's tourist industry for dozens of years, the travel advisory issued by the Australian government would likely have no significant impact on the island's tourism, as had been proven several times since the Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005.

"Australia is a loyal market for Bali. Many of the country's citizens still come here despite travel advisories because they know that Bali is safe, and it's very easy for them to get information about Bali through the internet and travel agents."

The growth in Australian tourist arrivals to Bali had indeed been slowing, but this was only during the low season. The arrival rate would increase again in the holiday season, particularly at Christmas and New Year. The declining growth was also because many Australians now preferred to visit Europe, thanks to better economic conditions and the strengthening of the Australian dollar against foreign currencies.

"Since they have more money, they prefer to go to Europe on holiday. And at the same time, European countries facing a financial crisis offer a lot of holiday packages at lower prices," he explained.

However, Australians still enjoyed the island's beaches for sunbathing, surfing and recreational water sports. Ketut Ardana, ASITA Bali chairman, added that he had yet to receive any information concerning the impact of the travel advisory. "We keep updating information from our members, and there hasn't been any negative impact, like cancellations," Ardana stated.

Australia remains the biggest tourist market to the island, contributing 24.96 percent of total tourists during the period January to September this year. Ida Bagus Kade Subhiksu, head of the provincial Tourism Agency, said that during the last couple of years, Australia had held the top spot in the province's tourism market. Last year, its contribution to tourist arrivals reached 28.49 percent of the total 2,892,019 foreign arrivals, far above the number of visitors from other parts of the world.
